Meet Our Directors

Dr. Corey GardenhourDirector of Schools
Dr. Corey Gardenhour 
graduated from Milligan College with a degree in Biology/chemistry in 1998. He earned a Master of Education from Milligan College in 1999, during which time he was the first recipient of the Paul A. Clark Award. Dr. Gardenhour earned an Education Specialist degree in educational administration and supervision from Lincoln Memorial University in 2005. In 2008, he earned his doctoral degree in educational leadership and policy analysis from East Tennessee State University.

He has had a very well-rounded career, which began as an elementary teacher in both the Johnson City and Kingsport City school systems. He has served in many roles while in Elizabethton, beginning with serving as principal at West Side Elementary from 2006-2008.  The following year, he was promoted to central office and held the following positions: Director of Special Education, Director of Curriculum K-12, Director of RTI, Director of Testing, Director of Data Services, Director of 504, Director of Early Learning Services, Director of Technology,  and Director of Guidance and Health Sevices.

He is a speaker in high demand, having spoken in more than 100 different venues and over 200 times in his career.  He has presented at many conferences in the regional, state and local levels. He was the recipient of the State of Tennessee Supervisor of the Year for the East Grand Division.  He has chaired and participated in many scholarly and civic organizations. He is an adjunct professor at Milligan College in the doctoral program. Dr. Gardenhour is the author of Teacher Empowerment published in 2009.  He is the proud husband and father to his wife Dianna who is a teacher in Kingsport City Schools and two children, Eliza and Luke.


Richard VanHussAssistant Director of Schools
Richard VanHuss
is a 1990 graduate of EHS.  He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee (1995), Master of Education from Milligan College (1997), and an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Administration & Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University (2010). During his 21 years at Elizabethton City Schools, he has served as a Mathematics Instructor and an Assistant Principal at EHS, before moving to the Central Office as a Supervisor and Assistant Director of Schools. His wife, Crystal, is a Physical Education Instructor at West Side Elementary School. They have two children, Bryce and Bailee, who are students in the system. They are active members of Oak Street Baptist Church. He has served on the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for six years (not currently on Board).


Joey TrentChief Operating Officer
Joey Trent 
holds a BS in Information Technology from East Tennessee State University along with an AAS in Electronic Engineering. He has been with Elizabethton City Schools since 2002 and worked in K12 education since 1993. He is married with two sons. He serves as supervisor over Personnel, Technology, and Maintenance.

 


John HutchinsDirector of Federal Programs, Transportation & Health
John Hutchins
is a graduate of Elizabethton High School with a BS in Health and Physical Education from Milligan College, a Masters from Tusculum College and an Education Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University. He has worked in education for 29 years, teaching Government at Sullivan East for one year and History at T. A. Dugger for 9.5 years. He served as principal at Harold McCormick for 5.5 years before moving to the Central Office as a supervisor. He has been married for 31 years to his wife Pam. They have two sons, Michael (and his wife Maddie), and Joshua (his wife Lindsey, and their children Adriana, Veda, and Maverick). John and Pam love camping, fishing, and golf and their three dogs Annabelle, Jazzie, and Juanita. They attend First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. 

 


Myra NewmanDirector of Special Education, RTI2, Curriculum & Instruction, and Related Services
Dr. Myra Newman
 is a 1987 graduate of Sweetwater High School. She holds a BS in Special Education from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1993), Master of Science in School Psychology from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1996), Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership/Administration from Lincoln Memorial University (2001), and a Doctorate of Education in Instructional Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University (2011).  Through the years she has held the following positions:  special education teacher, diagnositician, school psychologist, elementary principal and currently Supervisor of Special Education, Curriculum, RTI2 and Related Services.  Myra is married to Mark Newman, a local Associate Pastor/Youth Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church and EHS Cross Country Coach.  They have two children, MaKayla and Craig.  


Beth WilsonDirectorof Business & Fiscal Management
Beth Wilson
earned her MBA in 1994 from East Tennessee State University. She then worked as a Payroll Accountant from 1995 to 2001, as a General Ledger Accountant from 2001 to 2004 and as the Elizabethton City Schools Finance Director since 2004.

 

 


Travis ThompsonDirector of Wandell Early Learning Center, Testing 6-12, Curriculum 6-12, Attendance & Related Services, Data Services

Travis Thompson is 1995 graduate of Sullivan East High School.  He obtained his BS in K-12 Physical Education from East Tennessee State University in 2006, M.Ed. in Elementary Education from East Tennessee State University in 2010, Ed.S. in Educational Administration & Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University in 2013, and is currently working towards his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from East Tennessee State University.  Before moving to Elizabethton City Schools, he served as a physical education teacher, assistant principal, and principal for Washington County Schools.  Travis is also a Master Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Reserves for over 22 years.  He is married to Christy Thompson an English & Language Arts Teacher at Happy Valley Middle School and has two children Carson and Ella.
