On Thursday, West Side students in the new Rocket Club got to launch their rockets for the first time, and some flew nearly 1,000 feet. Principal John Wright started the club this year, and there are 24 students in the club from grades 3-5.
While they get to learn about space and engineering, launching rockets is what attracted most students to the new club. Students each assembled their own rockets and got to press the ignition button to launch them. Wright hopes this excitement will inspire an interest in space exploration and engineering careers among his students.
“Many of the ideas that are only science fiction today will be functional tools of the future, and we want our students to be prepared to be those developers and creators by getting them interested now,” said Mr. Wright.
Their next club project will be to build and race pine derby cars. Students will get to keep the rocket and car models they make.
West Side thanks the parents who assisted with the launch on Thursday and congratulates all the students on successful launches.
